The soundtrack associated with the 2001 film, I am Sam, was the first of its kind--it contains only Beatles cover songs. Because using original tracks by The Beatles in the film would have been too expensive, directors and producers put together a wonderful group of artists to provide their own renditions of these classic songs. Wainwright had recently performed "Across the Universe" with Sean Lennon and Moby for a televised tribute to John Lennon, titled Come Together: A Night For John Lennon's Words & Music. With Rufus already familiar with the song, it was too easy for directors to approach him and request that this song be included on their soundtrack. The resulting product was a beautiful studio cover of "Across the Universe," with Sean Lennon on backing vocals.
A music video was produced for this single, which includes clips from I am Sam in the background. It could be argued that this song is one of the tracks that hooks the most listeners to the Rufus' music.
It should also be noted that "Across the Universe" was included on the re-released version of Poses, which also includes Sean Lennon on guitar and backing vocals, but with additional vocals and a string arrangement.
