During the three years it took Rufus to make his debut album in Los Angeles, he fell victim to the temptations of drugs and alcohol. Upon completing the album, he returned to NYC, hoping to become a Bohemian musician and put together plans for another album. It was during this time, while living in the Chelsea Hotel, that parties, drugs, and alcohol became an addiction. Rufus wrote most of Poses while living here, and an overriding theme alluding to addiction is apparent throughout much of the album. While his first album was very personal and sentimental, Wainwright initially wanted to create this album from the perspective of a "fly on the wall," consisting of songs that were about other people. However, he would later learn that the songs he wrote about "others" were truly about him.
"Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk" most reflects the theme of addiction, while "California" addresses the life of partying in California. "Poses" beautifully sums of Rufus' state of mind during this era, and sparks of romanticism and self-searching appear in "Rebel Prince," "The Consort," and "The Tower of Learning." "Greek Song" reads like a dialogue between two men, which Rufus based on an encounter with a handsome Greek man he encountered. The album also contains a cover of Loudon Wainwright's song, "One Man Guy," with Martha Wainwright and Teddy Thompson on backing vocals.
Poses obtained critical and public acclaim, even though the album did not sell as well as Rufus had hoped. The album is considered a favorite by many fans, many of which were introduced to the singer during this time.
Produced, recorded and mixed by Pierre Marchand.
