Once again performing with family and friends, Rufus makes several appearances on Kate & Anna McGarrigle's compilation album, The McGarrigle Hour. This album not only delighted fans of the Canadian folk-singing duo, but critics as well. "Heartburn" appears as a solo track, while co-lead vocals appear on "Talk to Me of Mendocino," "Schooldays," "What'll I Do," and "Goodnight Sweetheart." In addition, Rufus provides light backing vocals in "Alice Blue Gown," "Baltimore Fire," and "Johnny's Gone to Hilo."
Apart from Rufus, other guests include sister Martha Wainwright, father Loudon Wainwright III, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, Chaim Tannenbaum, Jane McGarrigle, and Lily Lanken.
Due to the critical acclaim and general success of this album in the folk community, a television program appropriately titled "The McGarrigle Hour" was aired, in which family and friends heard on the album perform live for video. This video performance can be found on DVD.
