Rufus was only 14 years old when he wrote "I'm a-Runnin'" for the Canadian film, Tommy Tricker & the Stamp Traveller. The song earned him a nomination for the 1989 Genie Award (Best Original Song) as well as the 1990 Juno Award (Most Promising Male Vocalist). In the film, Rufus is seen performing "I'm a-Runnin'" during a chase sequence.

Production credits for musical score go to Kate McGarrigle, Anna McGarrigle, and Jane McGarrigle (composers). Rufus' sister, Martha Wainwright, also sings a song for the film.

It should be noted that Rufus later revisited this song, re-recording it for a film sequel, The Return of Tommy Tricker (1994). This shortened, acoustic performance is heard during the closing credits of the film.
