 Cowboy Song

See one thousand eyes, forget the starry skies, leaving you
Every sunny path's a bitter aftermath, leaving you
So could you kindly shut the door?
It's strange to think I needed air before

Then shut down the world, and stay within four walls
Please shut down the world, and stay within these four walls

Just one look at you, I'm finished wanting to challenge God
So I made my heart a home of elements so strong, we'll never feel the cold
And if God should come to call, I'll leave the curtains drawn
Won't make the slightest sound, 'til He's out of town
And our secret tune remains, and we're done failing death

Then shut down the world, and stay within four walls
Please shut down the world, and stay within these four walls
And stay within these four walls

 NOTES & QUOTES

  • "This is about forbidden love of cowboys... 'cause you know they're all fucking each other, the minute you turn your back. But the other thing is that I don't mention male-male or female-male or anything so it could be about two cows... two... whatever... forbidden love in general." - March 27, 1999 - Park West, Chicago, IL

  • Rufus initially wrote this song with the intention of it being used for Brokeback Mountain back when Gus Van Sant was directing the film. Unfortunately, the movie fell through temporarily, and this song did not make it into the final product under the direction of Ang Lee. "Cowboy Song" later became a bonus track for Release the Stars

  • Prior to studio release, this song was often called "Shut Down the World (Leaving You)"
