Hope.
Hope.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune -- without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I've heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul.
(Repeats)
Hope. Hope. Hope. Hope. |

- Lyrics from Emily Dickinson's poem, Hope is the Thing With Feathers
- This movement is part of the "Bloom" project in which Wainwright composed a six-movement collection for the Stephen Petronio Company. Being performed in April 2006 at Joyce Theater, Wainwright included the Young People's Chorus of New York City to provide backing vocals to his pre-recorded lead vocals.
- Studio recordings of these six movements were available for download on the Young People's Chorus of New York City's website on April 28, 2006, though these recordings do not appear on an album or any other product.
